Canada Massage Therapy Requirements
Canada does not have a national massage therapy board. Each province has individual rules and regulations regarding the practice of massage therapy. PLEASE NOTE: We provide the below information about your province as a courtesy but cannot guarantee its accuracy because laws are continually subject to change. If you have questions about the information we have provided below, please contact your licensing agency directly. Your governing board will hold you ultimately responsible for knowing the laws that apply to you. We do not deviate from our posted return and exchange policy if you later determine that a course you enrolled in is not valid for CEs in your jurisdiction.
For Canada massage therapists who also have a license to practice in the United States, please refer to our state laws page for details on US course approvals. Institute of Somatic Therapy is approved by the NCBTMB as a continuing education approved provider (#280672).
The College of Massage Therapists of New Brunswick (CMTNB) is a not-for-profit organization established by the province of New Brunswick, for the purpose of advancing and maintaining the standard of massage therapy in New Brunswick, to govern and regulate massage therapy services provided to the public and provide for the welfare of members of the public.

The CMTNB defines continuing education as “any learning experience, post graduation, which directly relates to massage therapy and enhances a massage therapist’s skill or practice. The CMTNB respects a massage therapist's right to develop in their own unique direction and, therefore, this learning experience may include, but is not limited to: courses, workshops, conferences or self study.”
Renewal date: October 31
Renewal cycle: Every three years
Continuing Education Requirements: You must complete a minimum of 30 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) during each three-year cycle. CEUs are calculated at one (1) CEU for every two (2) hours of professional learning. The certificates awarded by Institute of Somatic Therapy are in one-hour increments. As such, if you earn 12 CEs through Institute of Somatic Therapy, that will be equivalent to 6 CEUs for CMTO purposes.
A minimum of 20 CEUs must relate to competencies or modalities identified in Category A. (Modalities in Category A are directly related to the Scope of Practice and the Core Competencies.) The remaining 10 CEUs may correspond to Category A or Category B activities. (Modalities in Category B are complementary to massage therapy and are not considered part of a massage therapist’s scope of practice.) Please refer to the “Documents” section of the CMTNB website for a sample list of Category A and B topics.
The CMTNB must approve each workshop or course offered in relation to activities in Category A. (Also, courses that are approved by the CMTO, CMTNL and CMTBC will be recognized by the CMTNB. Because the credit hours may vary, it is advised to verify with the CMTNB before registration in such a course.)
Institute of Somatic Therapy is approved for Category A CEs for the following courses:
- Prenatal Massage Fundamentals (Step One), 6 Category A CECs (valid through December 31, 2019).
